Ryu is one of the first 16 characters in Super Smash Bros. Crusade. Since he entered the series earlier than in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, his moveset differs from the official Super Smash Bros. series. He was resprited in v0.9.1, and several official Smash series compliant moves have been added since v0.9.2.

His Japanese voice actor, Hiroki Takahashi's portrayal of Ryu from Street Fighter IV and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes was repurposed for Crusade since v0.3. However, there is still one voice clip of Ryu from Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike by Tōru Ōkawa that was used in Crusade prior to v0.3.

Attributes[]

Ryu is a cruiserweight (same weight as Captain Falcon, Snake, etc.) who excels at discouraging opponents from being too close or too far away. When at medium-range distances from foes, Ryu has few options, so keeping foes out of that zone is Ryu's primary goal. Ryu is also a slow-moving character, so controlling space around him is very important. Fortunately, Ryu's Hadoken and air attacks make him one of the more versatile characters at edgeguarding.

Ryu's Hadoken is an excellent projectile, being one of the largest and is relatively damaging for its speed. Shoryuken, his rising uppercut move, is a great way to keep enemies from jumping at Ryu, but it leaves him open to counter attacks when it misses. Tatsumaki Senpukyaku moves Ryu horizontally and has high priority, but, like Shoryuken, it is easy to punish. His Focus Attack from Street Fighter IV also makes an appearance.

Ryu can cancel neutral attacks, tilt attacks, smash attacks, and special moves in that order. Also note that Ryu's tilt attacks depend on the length of button presses.

Ryu can also perform special moves by inputting commands. However, these command inputs are very harshly judged and can easily turn into a dash attack. In addition, even if a special move is performed by command input, there is no need to bother using this method, since the only advantages are the ability to shoot Hadoken, which flies faster than normal, and to shoot Hadoken when the Final Smash is available.

Ryu, Evil Ryu and Chun-Li all have the durability of their EX special moves in addition to the EX meter, that stores up to three EX special moves per section, which fills up by either dealing or taking damage. Once one of the sections of the gauge is filled up, they can perform any EX special moves, which depletes one section of the EX meter, otherwise, when the gauge is fully empty, they cannot perform any EX special move until one section of the EX meter is filled up again.

When fully charged, he breaks the opponent's shield with a single blow. Ryu can also perform a technique called the Focus Attack Dash Cancel. Trivia[]

  • Prior to v0.9, Ryu's sprites were taken from Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes.
  • In v0.9.2 to v0.9.3, Ryu, Evil Ryu and Chun-Li always faced their nearest opponent. This specification was removed in v0.9.4.
  • In the latest version, Ryu, Wario and Greymon (and incidentally Weegee) are the only characters voiced by more than one voice actor.
